Is Faith Performance Enhancing?
Does believing in God increase your chances of winning?
Athletes of faith include I've worked with or studied include: Mohammed Ali, Sonny Bill Williams, Anthony Mundine, Jonathan Edwards and strength athletes Paul Anderson, Fred Hatfield and Rich Froning.
These athletes have 2 things in common:
They attribute their ability to God
They've done things no other human has been capable of, on some level they are all ground breakers.
What does it take to do something that’s outside of what’s possible in the eyes of the majority?
What might religion give?
A deep belief of what will be. A vivid image and a feeling that it must happen. Belief in manifestation and release of responsibility is paradox of faith. Prayer could be considered as concentrated thought energy. Energy which moves into the ether to the highest power, to can create. The metaphor of planting a seed and nurturing it to create the reality you wish to live exists in many religions and self-help texts. Release is then believing that the circumstances which arrive are divine circumstances that shouldn’t be cursed since they come from the same sources as the prayer. External as well as internal forces have been activated to make reality.
Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Galatians 6:7
Does this sound like rubbish to you?
The idea that “only matter matters” is a common belief from the 20th century that some still hold. Quantum physics has proven that what you can see is just a fraction of reality. The work of Greg Bradden, Joe Dispenza, Bruce Lipton, Clive Beckster - Mind-blowing book. and Lynne Taggart are some of those that changed the way I see the world. Science is the religion of the modern age and most of these guys worked in medical research or military intelligence.
Bob Proctor is a big part of the reason why this website exists! I did his Success Puzzle and Thinking Into Results facilitator training as well as 6 minutes to success before RealMOVEMENT Project was born.
Do you have to choose a religion to interact with higher forces?
I don’t believe that you do. But to believe deeply from an intellectual point of view (through authors like those mentioned above) is much more difficult than to have faith in Buda, Jesus or Mohammed.
I recently read “First: What it takes to win” by Rich Froning. The book is about his faith more than anything else. He put his success at the service of the bigger thing that he believed in and he surrendered himself to hard training and whatever it took to be the best he could be.
Working in sports I’ve seen that when athletes of faith drift away from what they believe in they create an internal division that decreases performance.
Here is a lesson for us.
It’s not the doing or not doing that really matters. It’s about doing what you know you should be doing most of the time. Things that take you towards where you want to be in life.
Now the process of change from destructive habits that take you away from your dream, to habits that take you towards them is not something that will happen overnight. Behaviour change psychologists Chip and Dan Heath suggest that we must intellectually (conscious mind) and emotionally (subconscious mind) engage with the new belief or habit and even then the environment will have a huge impact on our results.
I’m a huge believer in the power of environment.
Belief is difficult to build alone. Having 1 person who is truly with you on your mission can make the world of difference to your confidence and daily actions. As a coach it’s your job to help others believe in your belief in them. That’s right read it again.
Athletes and students have to believe in you to listen to you. Your certainty about what your athlete can achieve will be proportional to your level of success as a coach.
Dan Millman is one of the best writers in this area. He blends the spiritual with success principles and foundations of successful coaching. He is a man of deep faith, he has achieved great things.
If you’re not working for and with a higher purpose then just “deciding” to believe in god / a higher power or a certain religion is unlikely to change your life.
The challenge for us is to know with certainty that our thoughts matter and shape the fabric of our existence.
“Irrational beliefs can boost performance provided they are held with sufficient conviction” Bounce - Matthew Syed.
Question is, is being rational, rational?
Is it the delusional few that rise from poverty to shape the world in their vision?
Is it the delusional few who believe so deeply that they are destined to change the world?
