The ATG Difference

So is ATG really different or is this just another overhyped infomercial sold by the owner?

I’ll tell you more about what qualifies me to have this opinion shortly but first let’s look at the system…

If ATG is what I’m saying it is, then it must break from traditional strength training paradigms…

 

Point 1. Extreme Range Strength is what sets ATG apart from other training systems.

Charles Poliquin manipulated the strength curve with great mastery in his highly published arm programs. He had arms that nobody could argue with.

Ben has done the same with legs but taken the range of motion further in the ATG system.

The only other people to have done this are bodybuilders like Tom Platz.

When I saw it in 2018, I knew Ben had cracked the code. And he was sharing the solution!

The extreme range strength was the key to restoring child-like human ability.

Since then, Ben and I have been working on restoring function in all joints.

 

Point 2. Every movement is scalable so that anybody can start.

Most people get joint pain just watching Ben’s videos!

What’s cool is that Ben fully understands this, having recovered from multiple surgeries and icing his knees daily from before he reached high-school.

Ben’s 66 year old mother, Celia, trains ATG. So do 12 year old kids.

 

You might be thinking… well, my training system is scalable too, I take weight off the bar…

But does that path take your clients to KOT Squats, Dunks and Splits?

 

Point 3. A quantified system of athletic development.

Charles believed in numbers, and Ben has taken that to another level with new movement progressions.

The path is clear. Ben now has hundreds of documented cases where when a certain level of strength is achieved, there is an accompanying level of performance and resilience too.

 

Point 4. Data without noise

Because ATG Programs last for 12 weeks, you really know exactly what result the program produces.

The longer you do the same thing, the more confident you can be of what is causing the positive or negative outcomes.

When you change programs every 2-3 weeks you might in theory unlock new gains, but you never really know the driving factors for success or failure..

With constant variation, results are a moving target and you can’t know what’s causing what.

If one of the Zero, Dense, Standards or Genetic Potential programs didn’t work, the numbers would be clear across thousands of case studies, across all ages and demographics around the world.

Dunking and sprinting themselves are ultimate accountability for ATG Athletes.

We barely ran. But when we did, it felt better than ever despite both of us having long-term injuries.

5. Joint Strength matches muscular strength.

Logically this makes sense since it’s the connective tissues that are failing most often and have the longest recovery times.

6. Deceleration Strength matches Acceleration Strength.

Again, a formula one car with Volkswagen Bug breaks wouldn’t be expected to stay on the tracks long even with the highest skilled driver!

Now taking my word for it or dabbling with ATG Online is not what the world needs right now.

What it needs is Coaches who are living proof of how trainable human ability is.

When you have the numbers and you can do what most professional athletes and lifetime gym-rats cannot, then you will have a new level of belief from the people you work with.

This is going to be a 2 year journey. At the end of it you’ll have rare knowledge, ability and experience.

It’s taken me 20 years to discover this truth and Ben has been working on it for over 10 years.

If we haven’t met, I’m Keegan Smith

If you’re wondering whether I really have the credentials to know and back ATG, and to guide a new generation of coaches to lead world sport, then read this section.

I’m a child of professional sport, having grown up interacting with professional athletes since my earliest memories.

My father was a Rugby League coach, my brother and uncle have gone on to do the same…

I saw all 3 of them, and hundreds of their players, battle with serious injuries.

Growing up around athletes chasing wins, I’ve always wanted to win…

I also wanted to be strong from a young age.

Problem was, I wasn’t.

In fact, I was too slow and weak even for the unpopular sport of field hockey.

Add to that overuse injuries in the heel, shins, knees and hips starting from the age of 10 and you can see why I became a Strength Coach.

In my late teens, I discovered strength training and became one of the fastest, strongest players.

I thought I was finally on course to realise my olympic dream. But when I missed the Australian U21 selection after many injuries, I began to focus on coaching.

From very early in my career as a Strength Coach I knew I was part of the problem.

I could see strength training is a double edged sword.

As you increase the potential for force by muscle growth and nerve power, you also increase the potential for injury.

The muscles get strong without strengthening the tendons, ligaments and bones. Unsurprisingly, bad things follow.

Acceleration gets upgraded but the brakes don’t.

Upper body gains often come easier than lower body gains...

When you look at children playing, you see something very different…

They move freely...

Only a rare few professional athletes manage to maintain child-like fluidity.

I’ve come to believe that modern athletic development is the primary cause of premature physical ability decline.

Do you and your clients have the ability to swing on a tree or jump off a table at any time like children can?

Will you achieve that ability by continuing to train like you do today?

Shouldn’t athletic development be aiming to prolong the innate human excellence children enjoy?

These are the questions I was asking myself as I went through the abstract tertiary education experience of Exercise Science.

 

When I started as a Strength Coach in Professional Rugby in 2004, it nearly broke me mentally and physically…

I was weak (100kg bench, 90kg clean)…

I was small (75kg at 182cm)…

It was hard to get a connection and credibility…

I also knew that my 4 years of University left me with next to nothing to offer the players.

I knew that to make a career as a coach, I would need to change myself.

I committed to my own training, to getting a real education and worked my way up as a strength coach.

Fortunately for you, finding a Strength Mentor in 2021 is not the challenge it once was.

By 2013, I was experimenting with many unconventional methods. 

I didn’t have the systemization of ATG, but I’m very confident it was the closest thing to an ATG endorsed program in the league.

The result? 

My team won regular season, the grand-final, the world club challenge, the club championship and set an all-time record for opposition teams held to scoreless - Zero.

Sonny Bill Williams (the highest profile player in Rugby) found his best form and played all the big games after years of niggling injuries.

That year was the start of a dynasty that continues to this day.

2013 was my last year full-time in professional sports.

With the birth of my first child, I wanted to build my own future and help other coaches achieve what they wanted.

 

Even as a consultant I saw massive success with these alternative methods.

In 2014 I worked one to one with James Tedesco after 3 consecutive lower leg injuries (ACL, Fibula, Knee Cap).

We squatted deep, gained range and he has fulfilled the potential everyone knew he had, including winning back to back premierships at the Roosters during the 2018 and 2019 Premierships.

I was a consultant for the Roosters during the 2018-2019 premiership years with my 2014 intern Patrick Lane as the strength coach at only 26 years old.

 

In 2019, when Sonny Bill was in doubt for making the 2019 World Cup, I flew to New Zealand for 10 days to help with his preparation.

Sonny made the squad and got a chance to play for 3 world-cups in a row.

We then did a month-long camp later in 2019 in preparation for returning to Rugby League on the biggest contract in Rugby League history.

In Australian terms, this is the equivalent of 3 Super Bowls and being personal coach to Lebron James.

 

I don’t share this winning record to brag.

What I want is for YOU to change the way athletes are prepared.

What I want is for YOU to change the way humans learn to live.

What I want is for YOU to experience the joy of helping the best get better.

 

Despite my success, I knew I didn’t know and the search continued. 

When I discovered Ben… I knew he had the biggest missing puzzle piece.

By this stage I had interned with Phil Richards (Europe’s first Westside Barbell Certified Coach), Ido Portal, Coach Sommer and had more than 15 days at Poliquin events along with tens of thousands of hours of my own research.

I had obsessively studied and tested everything from old-time strongman, hand-balancing, chain breaking, gymnastics, bodybuilding, powerlifting, strongman, weightlifting and CrossFit.

While I loved every minute of it… I knew that I hadn’t found what I was looking for.

From all that research, it was Charles Poliquin who had the most answers to the questions I was asking.

I’ve heard that his biggest regret was not focussing more on range of motion earlier in his career.

The Poliquin solution was also very complex to implement in groups.

Some of the keys to his program were lost in the many volumes of genius that he produced.

 

Is ATG the next chapter of what Charles Poliquin had been searching for?

Results will tell us.

From 2014-2018 I mentored hundreds of coaches. 

Some opened gyms, others worked with professional and olympic athletes.

I preached “Be A Product Of Your Program.”

And that is my intention for ATG Coaches.
